Woman ‘embarrassed’ that her fiance sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to his 5-year-old in a restaurant
Is it okay to embarrass oneself to make a sad child laugh?
Birthdays are a huge deal for kids and love it when their parents, friends, and other loved ones gather for their birthday party. It hurts them when their parents or someone they love a lot misses the function.
This topic was highlighted in a recent Reddit post in which a woman is embarrassed by her fiance after he sang ‘happy birthday’ to his son loudly in an expensive restaurant. The boy was sad because his mom couldn’t make it and his father, the woman’s fiance, thought it would brighten the boy’s mood.
Woman tells fiance he embarrassed her
The author starts the post by saying that she has been with her fiance, Ned, for over a year. Ned has a five-year-old son with his ex-girlfriend and takes the boy to places that aren’t child-friendly.
Ned’s son’s birthday party was held in an expensive restaurant but his mother (Ned’s ex) couldn’t make it because she fell sick. The author mentioned that the place was unfitting for a child’s birthday party because they wouldn’t be able to sing or dance and celebrate openly.
After they ate their food, the birthday cake arrived, which was a surprise to the author because she thought they could cut one and celebrate at home. Then, Ned started singing ‘Happy birthday’ at the top of his voice. She tried to whisper to him to bring his voice down, but he ignored her.
The author felt embarrassed and thought someone would ask Ned to stop, as clearly many people were staring at them. But instead, a few people offered to take a video. She also noticed that after the cake cutting, Ned’s son got a little excited and hyperactive, which wasn’t good because they were in a public space.
When the author explained what she felt about Ned singing loudly, he justified that he was just making his son, who was sad because his mother couldn’t join, happy. He also felt that the author was embarrassed to be seen with him and his child.
