Is it right to steal from a loved one?
The cost of education in the US is tremendously high. According to a research, the average cost of college is $20,770 for public schools (in-state) and $46,950 for nonprofit private schools.
How should a student react when the hard earned money they kept aside for fees was stolen?
This topic was highlighted in a recent Reddit post about a man who stole the money his girlfriend had kept aside for college fees. She had worked three jobs to collect $14,000.
Should one report theft against a loved one?
The author starts the post by saying she is a medical student and is currently in her last semester. Since she couldn’t get a loan, she worked two to three part time jobs to pay college fees and barely had a social life.
After collecting the fees for the last semester, she hid them in a box in her closet. Only her boyfriend has stayed in her apartment since she started saving money. But she’s never told him about the money.
When she checked for the money the day before she was planning to deposit it, it went missing. She freaked out and searched the entire apartment, thinking she had misplaced it.
Then, she called her boyfriend, but he didn’t pick up. He called her the next day and acted all confused when she enquired about the money. After a while, he went to her apartment, admitted to having taken it, and promised to return it.
The author was furious, wondering how he would pay $14,000 in two weeks, and reported the theft to the police. The police arrested him, and his family called her, asking her to retrieve the case. His mother said racist and hurtful things to the author, but his brother was respectful and promised to return her money if she took the case back.
Stealing is a heinous crime
Theft is a crime and needs to be punished irrespective of who stole from whom.
As for the author, she is confused about whether to trust her boyfriend’s family or wait till she gets the money back. She knows that they may not return the money if she retrieves the case.
What do you think? Should the author give her boyfriend’s family the benefit of the doubt and retrieve the theft case? Or should she wait till they return her money?
