What should you do when a person doesn’t knock before entering?

Knocking on a door is a sign of respecting others’ privacy. This can also give the person who is inside the room or bathroom a chance to prevent others from entering their private space.

This topic was highlighted in a recent Reddit post in which a man barges in on his sister-in-law while she is in the bathroom.

Woman installs a lock on the bathroom door after her brother-in-law kept barging in

The author starts the post by saying that she and her husband promised that they wouldn’t have any locks in their house. Everything went smoothly till her brother-in-law moved in with her and her husband after his divorce. The author’s problem is that he doesn’t knock or let her know he is entering the bathroom when she is inside and just barges in.

She is certain that he doesn’t do this with her husband. She told her husband this but he laughed it off and called her paranoid. She felt embarrassed because her brother-in-law would see her exposed, making her uncomfortable. Her husband spoke to him and he apologized but nothing changed.

So she considered getting a lock for the bathroom. She decided that if her brother-in-law walked in on her again, she would get a lock installed.

A few days back, her brother-in-law walked in when she was showering, claiming to want to pee. She was furious and installed a lock. But when her husband saw it, he was furious. He promised and guaranteed that his brother would not barge in again. But she refused to remove the lock.
