How important is privacy?

Asking someone or knocking on a door before entering another person’s personal space is a sign of respecting their privacy. Most importantly, it’s a polite signal to a person inside the room that someone is waiting outside.

But some people refuse to knock and thereby disrespect others’ privacy.

This topic was highlighted in a recent Reddit post in which a woman refuses to seek her sister’s permission before entering her room.

Woman tells her sister that she overreacted

The author starts the post by saying that she is a full-time college student living with her sister, Claire, and Claire’s husband, Thomas.

Since the author doesn’t work, she doesn’t own any skincare cosmetics and borrows them from Claire. Initially, Claire didn’t seem to have an issue with the author walking into her room randomly and grabbing things.

Later, she asked the author to seek her permission before entering her room. Claire’s attitude was triggered by the incident where the author walked in on Thomas dressing when she wanted to get eye shadow.

But the author doesn’t see why she should ask her sister’s permission before entering her room because it’s bothersome and wrote, “I figured this would make things complicated.”

Having said that, the author walks into her sister’s room at night and sees the couple in an intimate position. She explains that she had no idea they were getting intimate because Claire said Thomas wasn’t feeling good for the past two days.

Claire shouts at the author to leave and berates her later. She and her husband ignored her in the morning and wanted her to apologize, making the author wonder whether she was wrong.
